This is a drum from the east of India used for carnatic music. It is made of baked clay and shaped as an earthenware jar.
Both ends are covered by goat skin membranes fastened together by camel skin straps.
The membranes have a black circle or “siahy” made of flour and ferric oxide, which allows a great variety of harmonics.
